Why a Thai bank refuses to open an account

The reason decides what to do next. Sometimes it can be fixed in one visit, sometimes it can’t.

Your visa

On a visa exemption stamp or a tourist visa, many banks and branches say no. Some open accounts only for long-stay visas or with a work permit.

Missing documents

No proof of address, no Thai phone number in your name, or no letter from your employer or school.

A hold on another account

If another of your accounts is frozen by the police, other banks often refuse until the hold is lifted.

Police or cyber police freeze →

The branch’s own rules

Two branches of the same bank can give different answers. The branch manager decides a lot.

School or employer not accepted

Some banks don’t accept documents from certain schools or companies.

Unclear purpose

The bank wants to understand why you need the account and where the money will come from.

How we help you open an account

Step 1

Find the real reason

We ask the bank in Thai what exactly stopped the account opening.

Step 2

Check for holds

If you had problems with another account, we check with the cyber police that no police case is still blocking you.

Step 3

Choose the bank and branch

We tell you which bank and branch are realistic with your visa and documents, and what to prepare.

Step 4

Go with you

We go to the branch with you, speak Thai at the counter and, if the bank approves, stay until the account and the app are set up.

New Krungsri account on a student visa

Unblocked and a new account the same day

Documents banks usually ask for

  • Passport with a valid visa
  • Work permit, or a letter from your school or employer
  • Proof of address: rental contract, house registration or a condo title deed
  • A Thai phone number in your name
  • Sometimes a reference letter from your embassy
  • Money for the first deposit

Every bank and branch has its own list. We check it before you go, so you don’t make the trip for nothing.

What we can’t promise

  • The bank makes the final decision. Nobody can honestly guarantee it.
  • Without a long-term visa, many banks will say no. We say this before you pay.
  • We don’t open accounts through shortcuts or with someone else’s documents.
  • An account opened on a short visa can be restricted later, at the next KYC review.
  • We don’t arrange visas through shortcuts. For visas, see UnblockPro.Asia ↗

Questions about account opening

Why did the bank refuse to open my account?
Most often because of the visa type, missing documents or a hold on another of your accounts. Branches often don’t explain the real reason. We ask in Thai and find out.
Can I open an account on a tourist visa or a visa exemption stamp?
Sometimes, but many banks and branches say no. It depends on the bank, the branch and your documents, and the rules change. We tell you honestly what is realistic before you pay.
Another bank froze my account. Will a new bank open one?
Often not while the hold is active. In our cases, other banks refused to open an account until the police hold was lifted. We usually start by lifting the hold.
Will another branch give a different answer?
Sometimes yes. Branches of the same bank can apply the rules differently. We choose where your case is realistic, but we don’t promise the result.
Do I need to come to the bank?
Yes. The account holder has to be at the branch to open an account. We prepare everything in advance and go with you.
How long does it take?
If the documents are ready and the bank is realistic, often one visit. In one of our cases we lifted a freeze and opened a new account the same day. If documents are missing, it takes longer.
Is this legal?
Yes. We work only through official procedures with the bank. We are a registered Thai company, not a law firm. When a case needs legal representation, a licensed Thai lawyer joins it.
